EATING OUT

As a rule of thumb the further you go inland the cheaper and more authentic the food.  Our current recommendations are:

****Bar Pedro - Jesus Pobre.   Excellent value for money, with a delightful rear terrace (and peacocks).  As you enter the village from Gata, turn left into the main street and you will find it on the right.  Beer comes in a jug here - jarra de cerveza (pronounce J like an H).  Closed on Mondays.  This is one of our favourites because of its sheer simplicity.

El Hoyo 19 - La Sella Golf Club.  Sit on the golf club terrace and enjoy good food.  Great at night when you dont want to go too far - you can walk there or drive around the golf course.  They also have a fixed menu (menu del dia) at lunchtimes from Monday to Friday.  You don't need to be golfing to eat there either!

Taberna Antigua - by La Sella.  Leave La Sella by the main entrance, turn left and it is on the right just after the first roundabout.  Dont get put off by its position because the food is excellent. The restaurant itself is gloriously old and rustic.  You need to book - 96 576 0388.  Closed on Wednesdays.

Boteros - Gata   Drive through Gata on the main road, from La Sella, and it is on the left about 400 yards before you leave the village.  It is painted bright blue.  They do a fixed menu or an a la carte - we suggest the fixed menu (menu del dia).  One of our latest finds and its a real gem!!  Great decor as well.  There is no need to book and you can eat early (1900).

***Benimaquia  Leave the golf club at the main entrance and turn left.  After ¼ mile there is a sharp right hand bend, by the railway crossing, the restaurant is just after on the left.  It is very Spanish and they have a large outdoor terrace with vines.  Try their roast leg of lamb.

La Brujeria - Pamis (near Ondara).  Excellent Indian restaurant.  They serve an authentic Thali menu.  This is definately worth a visit.  It is not like any Indian you have ever visited.  It is in an fantastic old building with wishing well in the middle of a tiny village.  Quite charming.  Go to Ondara and just before the one way system there is a clothes shop on the left and a sports shop on the right.  Turn right and the village is signposted left about half a mile up this road.  Closed Mondays and Sunday evenings.  Open every other evening and Sunday lunch time.  You must book - 96 576 7353.

El Coral del Pato - Gata (just after you leave the town on the road to Jalon).  Traditional Spanish barbecue restaurant.  Very Spanish - no fuss, no frills, no English, no menu.  Its worth a visit - ask for directions in Gata if you cannot find it.  Closed on Mondays.

Bar Mediterrraneo - Teulada.  Used by the locals and very cheap.  As you enter Teulada its on the right of the dual-carriageway as you go up the hill.

Bar Avenida - Teulada.  Opposite Bar Meditteraneo.  Used by the locals, cheap and lots of it.

Large number of good restaurants - Alcalali (Jalon Valley).  There are a lot of good restaurants in the Jalon Valley which is locally famous for its vino tinto collapso.  You can buy it straight from the barrel. There are a couple of Bodegas (distilleries) on the road to Alcalali, from Jalon.  They open in the evening so it makes a nice trip out - dinner and Bodega.  Dont forget to take a plastic bottle.

Bar Senija - Senija.  Ethnic and cheap.  Excellent liver and onions (their speciality) - higado.  As you enter Senija, from the Benissa direction, take the first right and its on the right.

MacDonalds - main road to Denia from Ondara.  Need I say more - just for the kids.
